Once a year, tens of thousands of people gather in Nevada’s Black Rock Desert to create Black Rock City, a temporary metropolis dedicated to community, art, self-expression, and self-reliance that is Burning Man. With an art theme dubbed ‘Metamorphoses’, the 2019 edition explored the festival’s transformative nature. Thousands of attendees set up campers and tents as they prepared for a week of partying and enjoying art. The celebration culminated with the tradition of the burning of an effigy, known as "the Man."
The Black Rock City grounds are enormous. So big, in fact, that it can be seen from space. A satellite, belonging to space technology company Maxar Technologies, captured images of the Burning Man site on the day it welcomed ‘burners’, and the photos show just how much of a production the festival is each year. Nearly 80,000 people made their way to Black Rock City this year, and here are some highlights of the event.
